2nd Grade Field Trip 2025

Updated: May 8

The mission of the UPHS is to preserve and share our local history.  The 2nd-grade curriculum includes learning about local history.  So, the first week in May, the UPHS hosts a field trip at History Park to share our history in a fun and interactive way with our 2nd graders.  This year 3 schools participated: Summit and Columbine Elementaries and Lake George Charter School. Students are put in groups of 10-12 and then rotate through 9 stations. This year we were lucky to have Lois Sprague again, the artist of the Woodland Park Historic Mural - "The Story of Us" - explain how the mural is a timeline of the history of the town, complete with antidotes about her experiences in painting the mural. Alanna Crawford, with a couple of 4H yearling heifers, Man-Eater and Micah, explained agriculture and ranching in the area using her fifth-generation family experience as original homesteaders. Traveling through the stations, the students learn about pioneer life, including washing clothes with a scrub board, the Midland Railroad, the many industries, and the Ute people with a tipi and drumming. Fun and learning were had by all!
