Woodland Park Wild West Days

by Steve Plutt

Quite often while researching, one stumbles across things that you aren't even looking for. Such was the case this earlier this morning when I happened upon four photos, that I've never seen, of the Woodland Park Wild West Days rodeo from 1922. You can see the old Pavillion that used to be just above the pond (now Memorial Park) in a couple of the shots.

There were captions for two of them that were separate from the photos which read:  “Outlaw Bill, Terror of Western Rodeos”, Made at Woodland Park, Colorado, August 3, 1922 at 5 p.m. It may be interesting to note that this horse has never been ridden, though dozens of cowboys have tried. The man, shown a foot out of the saddle in this picture, was thrown on the next jump.

“Ridin’ ‘im Slick, Wide an’ Handsome”. Made at Woodland Park, Colorado, August 2, 1922 at 1:30 p.m.

Then a third caption that is at the bottom of the one photo, "The cow jumped over the son".

The photographer's name is shown on two of the photos, Merwin Eberle.
