On May 11, 1859 a stagecoach arriving in Denver City dumped out an emaciated, hollow-eyed man. He was not unlike the hundreds of gold-seekers arriving daily except for his harrowing tale: along the way to Colorado, he'd been forced to eat both of his brothers in order to survive. Widespread permanent White settlement of Colorado began with the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1858-59 and it was often a violent and cutthroat affair taking place hundreds of miles from any government authority.
