You no doubt know that Pikes Peak takes its name from an explorer named Zebulon Pike, but the full story of Pike's expedition may surprise you. In 1894, when Governor Alva Adams gave a speech at Colorado College about it, he said this about someone involved:
“Wearing the uniform and sword of an American officer, he was in the pay of Spain and conspired to create out of the colonies west of the mountains a Spanish empire.”
